Abdominal Hernias

An abdominal hernia is the protrusion of an internal organ, like an intestine or the stomach, through the muscles and tissue in the abdomen. Hernias can cause varying degrees of discomfort and often require surgery; however, pain caused by hernias can be managed with a hernia support product, like a hernia belt or hernia truss.

About Abdominal Hernias

What is an Abdominal Hernia?

An abdominal hernia is the protrusion of an internal organ through the muscles and tissue in the abdomen.

Types of Abdominal Hernias

There are three common types of abdominal hernias, hiatal and incisional hernia.

Hiatal hernias occur when a portion of the stomach begins to bulge into the diaphragm. It is the result of weakened abdominal muscles and is common among obese individuals and people over 50.

Incisional hernias affect areas that have had surgical incisions because the muscles and tissue are now weakened after being cut.

Umbilical hernias occur when the intestines bulge through the abdomen, creating a bulge in or around the bellybutton. This type of hernia is often seen in babies under 6 months old and young children. Umbilical hernias can go away on their own, but occasionally require surgery.

Causes of Hernias

Hernias are caused by strained and weak muscles, a common result of age, congenital defects, injuries, surgery and chronic coughing.  Other common causes of hernias include:

  • Pregnancy
  • Constipation
  • Sudden weight gain
  • Surgery
  • Ascites (fluid in the abdomen)
  • Continuing cough or sneezing
